Message From the President

Dear ASID NYU/CE Member:

Happy Spring, ASID NYU/CE Chapter is blooming with changes, exciting programs and networking events.

The Board and I would like to personally thank Randee Longo and Karen Conway for their years of dedicated service to ASID Upstate New York and Canada East. We wish Randee and Karen well. Since Randee's resignation, The Rivers Organization has been working as our new Chapter Administrator. We welcome them to our Chapter and look forward to many years of a mutually beneficial relationship.

We are still accepting applications for the board. We have an immediate vacancy in the Financial Director position. This year 2012 - 2013 the two year positions of Director at Large and one year position of President - Elect and President are changing. In 2013-2014: the two year positions of Communications Director and Professional Development Director will change. In order to be president-elect you must have served on the board for at least one year. There are always positions open on committees. Please get involved today!

We would like to thank Todd Girvin of the Girvin Group for his service as Membership Director. Lauren Zacher from Sedgwick Business Interiors is the new Membership Director. We are very excited about the "Share the Love" Campaign. Invite a colleague to join today, give them your membership number for the "referred by field" to fill out their application and get a $50.00 credit towards your next membership dues or the ASID Store.

Don't forget this year's Design Competition. This year we are introducing an exciting new Category: "Your Best Design Ever." No restrictions!

Dani Polidor - Suite Artistry

Universal Design is Dani Polidor' s passion. Dani feels that a universally designed space is beautiful. The more people get used to seeing accessibility features, slip resistant flooring, lever handles and great lighting as standard, the less resistant people will be to incorporating them in the own remodeling projects.

ASID and IIDA Issue Joint StatementPress Release

The ASID and IIDA Boards of Directors reaffirm their desire and intention to continue our work together on issues of mutual interest that benefit the members of the interior design community.

Recent joint endeavors include:
  • Substantial investments by ASID and IIDA with the Interior Designers of Canada to restructure the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC), the profession's CEU registry for Interior Designers
  • Ongoing planning with ASID and IIDA to jointly provide a new, more accessible and lower cost NCIDQ preparatory program for designers
  • Increased opportunities for Student Chapter collaboration through the joint promotion of student member experiences including the Student Career Exchange and Student Career Bootcamp at NeoCon 2012
  • A joint Fellows summit at NeoCon 2012
The senior leadership and Boards of both organizations continue to explore joint initiatives that support our collective Members. We will meet later this month to continue that work and help provide strong leadership for our industry.
We sincerely believe that creating successful collaborative initiatives is the foundation for evolution of the profession and ASID and IIDA.
IIDA International and ASID National Presidents,
Peter Conant, IIDA, AIA, and Lisa Henry, FASID
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Will ASID and IIDA create one organization for the profession?
A: ASID and IIDA continue to work toward organizational unity on a number of resources and programs designed to benefit all members. At this time we cannot project precisely how these collaborative activities will evolve, but member value and the advancement of the interior design profession remains our top priority.
Q: What programs are ASID and IIDA currently collaborating on?
A: Recent joint endeavors include:
  • Substantial investments by IIDA and ASID with the Interior Designers of Canada to restructure the Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC), the profession's CEU registry for Interior Designers
Q: What is IDCEC and why was it established?
A: The Interior Design Continuing Education Council (IDCEC) is a centralized accrediting body for interior design continuing education. IDCEC aims to streamline the accreditation process for both course takers and providers, and to elevate the quality of continuing education within the industry.
Q: What is the new NCIDQ prep program that is being developed?
A: ASID's previous STEP workshop model required instructors and learners to participate in a three-day intensive program over the course of a weekend followed by a paper-based exam. Over the years, we have seen significant changes in the way people learn and in turn, ASID and IIDA are partnering to offer an improved course that offers a one-day, in-person meeting in addition to an online practical exam.

Q: How are the two organizations working together to benefit student members?
A: We are excited to collaborate on a new program at NeoCon 2012 called Destination Passport, which combines the resume and portfolio review, guest speakers, and 1:1 networking events of ASID's Student Career Exchange event and IIDA's Student Career Bootcamp event under one umbrella to provide students the fullest experience at NeoCon.

Presented by Jim Caughman, Senior Marketing Executive for the Kohler Interiors GroupJim Caughman

Jim presents a fascinating retrospective on not only furniture, fashion and music --but also architecture, painting and literature during the "extended" 18th century (1680 - 1830), a Golden Age of creativity. This spirited lecture explores the links between creative expressions in each period and illustrates the organic development from one period to another.

Jim Caughman is the senior marketing executive for the Kohler Interiors Group, responsible for the Baker, McGuire, ANN SACKS, and Kallista brands. Other than serving as the Executive Director of the Washington Design Center for 3 years, he has spent his entire career with Baker and Kohler.

While living in London for 3 years, he started Baker's International Division and opened its first showroom outside of North America. He has also been intimately involved in Baker's historical licensing programs with The Historic Charleston Foundation and The Stately Homes of England and works closely with guest designers such as Barbara Barry and Thomas Pheasant.

Jim has a B.A. in French Literature and an M.A. in Foreign Affairs and has studied 7 classical and modern languages as well as European and Asian cultural history. He is a member of the Luxury Marketing Council in New York and served on the American board of The British National Trust. He has also been designated a Distinguished Speaker by the American Society of Interior Designers.

Having a background in cultural history and an interest in classic luxury brands, Jim has spent his professional career articulating a brand story to interior design professionals and affluent consumers. Using his background in comparative cultural studies, he has lectured extensively on the history and development of furniture and decorative art.

Let's all get involved!  Find a cleanup opportunity in your community, plant a tree, switch to energy efficient light bulbs, start a compost pile, bike/walk to work...to far carpool!
Slow The Flow
A faucet leaking just one drop per second wastes over 1,300 gallons per year! A leak from a hot water source wastes both water and fossil fuel, creating more greenhouse gasses.  Most repairs to plumbing fixtures pay for themselves within just a year. Fix it!

Reduce, Reuse Recycle
It's more than just a slogan. You can start making the world a 'greener' place today: return hangers to the cleaners, donate clothing and computers to charities, pack lunches in reusable containers instead of bags, there are hundreds of easy things to do! It's up to you!
Walk, Hike, Ride A Bike
If people in the U.S. would occasionally ride a bike for a short errand instead of driving a car, over 70 million gallons of fuel could be saved each year! And there's the added benefit of enjoying the fresh air and exercise! For short errands, take a hike!
